“Everything about this moment is beautiful!” This was the mantra repeated continually by the regrettably-naked man at the recent Coachella Music and Arts Festival, as he was surrounded by three policemen and told to put his clothes back on. Despite numerous entreaties by both the cops and a few onlookers to comply, the man kept tossing his shed clothing away from him, succeeding in frustrating the constables enough for them to lay hands on him in an attempt to get him dressed.
The longer the scene went on — and the video is over five minutes in length — the more agitated the crowd became, with yells to the policemen to lay off and leave the guy alone. The man in question, however, remained fairly calm throughout, insisting over and over that everything was beautiful. Finally, he was wrestled to the ground amid a chorus of boos from the encircling crowd, which turned to angry screams a few seconds later as the man was repeatedly tasered by one of the policemen.
Now, I’ve never been tasered myself, and I assume there are tasers with variable levels of strength, but I have to admit being impressed by the man’s ability to both remain composed — such as he was — under assault, and that he was able to take so many hits without being visibly incapacitated. Indeed, after the third time, I was hoping he’d just pass out and put an end to the entire scene, but he kept going, and the cops kept tasering him, and I’m surprised the whole thing failed to turn into a riot. I have to say that these police were very calm and reasonable. I am a criminal defense attorney – it is my job to scrutinize the police. Here, they were right to request that he get dressed. They gave him many opportunities, and he refused. What else were they to do. They even remained polite with him.

I am not sure what the Coachella laws are concerning indecent exposure, so the cops might have been right to confront the guy as a criminal. However, the big, fat cop knee dropping the naked guy in the chest could have cracked a rib, punctured a lung and killed him. That was excessive force regardless of whether the naked guy was a law-breaker or not. It’s not like he was physically or sexually threatening anyone with his 2-inch penis!

This is absurd. I can understand them tazing him for resisting arrest, but why were they on him in the first place? It’s obvious that no one cared weather or not he was nude to begin with so who are these cops protecting? If anything was to be done about a situation such as this it should be to fine him. This man never once turned aggressive towards the police and should see the same respect in turn.

Nudity laws make no sense. We are born naked, every other animal on this planet is naked. No harm can possibly come from being naked outdoors. No one had a problem with it but the cops, and if anyone did have a problem with it, they can look away. Laws are meant to protect us from actual harm. Free speech says I can wear a shirt that says “raping dead babies kicks ass” but one cannot show their little peepee in public? grow the fuck up. These assholes risked cardiac arrest on someone whom there literally can be no question is unarmed. And what comes out of it? Freedom of speech covers the ability to be nude. This is unconstitutional.

In this particular case both the police and the man where wrong. The man was peacefully protesting in a sense, but he was in fact breaking a law. The cops did NOT need to tase him unless he attacked one of them, the knee to the abdomen was way over the line. The person who said it could’ve broken a rib punctured a lung and killed him was correct. So was risking this man’s life to “cover him up” really the right course of action no. But the police had the right to do everything they did. Like i said before both the man and the cops where wrong.

The man was breaking the law by being naked in a public place. Whether the crowd of people cared or not is irrelevant, as the officers are duty bound to enforce the law. The police officers asked the man a number of times to get dressed but he refused, and therefore he deserved to be arrested.
However, whilst performing their duty police officers are supposed to use “reasonable force”, in any given situation. Rather, the police officers resorted to excessive force by using a taser on an (obviously) unarmed man. Just because he was resisting arrest did not warrant the officers behaviour. The 3 large officers who could quite easily have physically overpowered the man, and restrained him with their handcuffs, or used a holding technique or armlock. Resorting to the use of a taser on an unharmed man was completely unnecessary, and they escalated the situation by repeatedly using it.
The man should have been arrested, but he should have made a formal complaint against the officers for excessive force and possible assault.
Referring the police as “pigs” is unconstructive and offensive. Society has laws for the good of us all, but means they also need to be enforced. Unfortunatley some individual officers get too taken by the authority granted to them. They should be dealt with by an investigaton into their behaviour, following a formal complaint from the arrested man.
It is sad that, peoples are naked in urs country…naked beaches, naked clubs….all social life has been destroyed… Wake up Americans it dosent happens in any muslim country.
