Michel Gondry’s 2nd DVD Amazes

By Ned Hepburn on April 22nd, 2009

Michel Gondry – director of “Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind”, “The Science Of Sleep”, and countless music videos – is back with a 2nd collection of music videos and short films.

Since his Directors Label dvd series folded in 2007 he’s decided to stick it out on his own with a brand new collection. His style verges between childish DIY and brilliant auteur, although its the mix of those two that creates his most stunning videos. Take the video for Kanye West’s “Heard ‘Em Say”: the rapper is shown walking around a deserted department store having the time of his life with some street children. Amazingly, Kanye ultimately decided not to put the clip into wide range release, much to the dismay of Gondry fans everywhere (a quick Google search will bring up the clip). The dreamlike video to Paul McCartney’s “Dance Tonight” showcases not only the directors sense of whimsy – it also showcases his fantastic outlook on life and death and not to mention his brilliant eye for style. See if you can spot Natalie Portman:

Needless to say, the DVD is full of about 20 music videos with commentary and a slew of extras, including the full versions of many of Gondry’s Youtube sensations. The infamous “Solving The Rubix Cube With Your Feet” clip is included here as is the follow up “Solving It With Your Nose”.

And if I told you this was all available for about $18 on Gondry’s new website, would you buy it? You would? Ok great. Then click here to go there. Gondry is also offering to draw you for $20, which if rumors are true he will use in a future project. Considering he’s probably one of the best and most visionary directors we have around today, $20 is a great deal to own a piece of history.

$20? Not bad. Might have to check this out after my next paycheck. You know, stimulate the economy and all.
