Prepare to feel the all-too commonplace sense of helpless, yet not entirely unexpected outrage. Two Domino’s employees share a moment behind the scenes, film the incident, and upload it to YouTube. They take it down a while later, but enterprising Tubers send it back up. Receiving condemnation from all sides, apparently Domino’s management was contacted and the duo were summarily fired.
That’s what we know on the surface of things. This recent news article, however, shows that there were more videos recorded, and that now there’s a warrant out for the arrest of the two now ex-employees, though it doesn’t say what they’re being charged. Domino’s has apologized for the behavior of the two, and claims that none of the food prepared had been sold.
It’s all too easy to believe that this sort of thing happens in fast food chains all across the continent. Working food retail is usually the first employment taken by unskilled, just out of high school teens, and as such, it’s typically low-paying. On top of that, employees receive the brunt of ill treatment from abusive customers and officious managers who tend to treat their vassals poorly. So it’s likely that this sort of thing happens far too often, but it’s still horrible to witness first-hand.
The question remains, however: are these two truly so stupid that they think they can offer something like this to the Internet and not have it end badly for them? Both of their faces are on video large as life with no attempt to even try to hide their identities. They were savvy enough to upload these videos to YouTube, but not smart enough to realize they could get in trouble for it? Then “Christy” makes a point of mentioning that she and “Michael” are both gay, apropos of nothing. If I were of a more suspicious mind — and I am — I’d think that there was some sort of strange entrapment scheme going on, a deliberate attempt to frame that particular Domino’s store, and perhaps cast some negativity over the Domino’s name in general. I could easily see word getting out among the more bigoted element of the country that “the gays” are ruining our beloved pizza franchises.
I’m probably reading too much into this, but the whole affair seems odd, and I’ll be expecting the other shoe to drop any day now. Watch the video below, if you don’t mind never eating at Domino’s again.
