Manolith Salutes: Cal Worthington

Cal Worthington is a car dealer. But – hey! hold on a second! – lemme tell ya something! Cal is MORE than just your average car dealer. I mean… what a car dealer. He’s the kind of car dealer that makes other car dealers go “gee whillakers! I should get out of this car dealing business because Cal is such a great and honorable car dealer!”.

Cal is the sort of car dealer than makes others jealous simply because they didn’t think of it first. Cal Worthington is and was a Southern California staple for many years. While that may not be remarkable in and of itself, Cal has become synonymous with the car dealership pitchman due to his series of “My Dog Spot” commercials. Of course, if you were to turn on a TV and see a car pitchman in a commercial acting wacky and crazy it would be de rigeour, would it not? And that’s what makes Cal different. From selling three cars in front of a post office in the early 50’s to the purchase of his gigantic ranch in Orland, just north of Sacramento, Cal became the ultimate salesman. With outposts of the Worthington Group in Anchorage, Arizona, and all up and down the west coast, Cal went from hawking jalopys to having a net worth of over $600 million.

But without the ‘My Dog Spot’ commercials which ran from the mid 60’s up until early 1990’s – the commercials which garnered him national fame (and several appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson) – he may have just become just another car salesman.

Below are some of our favorite My Dog Spot commercials. Here’s to you Mr Worthington; a fine Manolith salute.
