A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. And In This Man’s Lung.

979_400x300Remember that time you accidentally ate a watermelon seed and your stupid older brother scared you by saying a watermelon was going to grow inside your stomach? And then you said “Nu-UH”, and he said “Yeah-HUH”, and you cried and your mom yelled at your brother to knock it off and he just later smacked you around in private for tattling anyway? Good times.

Well, turns out your big brother may have been right all along. A 28 year old Russian man had been complaining of strong pain in his chest, so surgeons operated on him expecting to find a tumor. Instead, they uncovered a 5-centimeter fir tree somehow lodged and growing in his lung.

The surgeons suspect that the man had inhaled a seed that then took root, as there’s no way the plant could have gotten lodged in the man’s lung any other way. But if that’s true, then I’m surprised we haven’t seen this phenomenon prior to this incident.

Regardless, my brain is now filled with scary images. Remember the end of Darren Aronofsky’s “The Fountain”? What if this is a rare breed of vampire trees that feed on human blood? Maybe “Little Shop of Horrors” was based on a real event! And hey, I’ve accidentally inhaled bugs before; who knows? Maybe those bugs were carrying eggs! Vampire bug eggs! OMG I’M GONNA DIE LIKE JOHN HURT IN ALIEN!

Well, at least I’ll get a great story out of it. Keep reading Manolith.com for all your chest-bursting news. It was nice knowing you.
