Green Day Make A Play To Broadway

Pop punkers – and Manolith favorites – are set to debut a musical based on their 2004 mega-smash album “American Idiot”.

So approximately 17 years from their Gilman Ave crust-punk debut they now have a stage play. Huh. I wonder when the Flipper musical will be debuting. The Green Day musical will debut at the Berkley Repertory Theater and run from September 4th to October 11th of this year, at which point it will most likely move to Broadway. Yes, you read that correctly. If the Berkley run goes as planned (and given the fact that the last few Green Day albums have gone platinum), you will soon be able to see “American Idiot” on Broadway. Right next to “Cats”. Green Day got a lot of flack early in their career for “selling out” and one can only imagine what the 924 Gilman crowd are thinking now. 924 Gilman is a legendary punk venue in Berkley, CA, which helped break such legendary punk acts as Fugazi, Operation Ivy, and L7.

Although, you can’t fault the Green Day guys for making money. In this bloggers personal opinion, though, isn’t a musical a little bit much?
