Bigorexia

Every once in a while I come across a word that grabs me and I look it up, often because I don’t know the meaning and sometimes because…like I said, it grabs me. Bigorexia caught my attention. I kind of understood what it meant; the reverse of anorexia.

Bigorexia, BTW, is more or less an exclusively male thing. Women, you know suffer from a fear of size and are more liable to anorexia. Men who don’t know the answer to “How big is big enough?” are certified bigorexia affected. The medical term for bigorexia is muscle dysmorphia. So, if you’ve got a physique like say…Mike Tyson and you want to look like Sergio Oliva or you have decent physique but no six packs and you think that till such time that you look like a Greek statue, your friends won’t accept you here and Jesus won’t accept you there then you are in a bit of trouble.

Negatives of this condition include a poor social life, obsession with high protein food and sundry supplements, depressive tendencies, weird workout routines, etc.

We all strive to an ideal, well…at least in our minds a lot of us do. If only we’d focus on attainable goals that would do us and our families good, that would be such a relief for all. I think the first thing to do is try and watch less of programs such as WWF, WWE and such.
