Today’s Boston Red Sox 2009 Opening Day game at Fenway Park against the Tampa Bay Rays was canceled this morning. The announcement – a cancellation due to severe weather – came just four hours before what was supposed to be the team’s first pitch of the season. According to the Red Sox weather service, Meteorlogix, as well as other local weather services, Boston’s afternoon and evening forecast for the day will feature heavy rain, strong winds and possible thunderstorms.
Quick to reschedule, Red Sox President Larry Lucchino has already announced the postponed game to start tomorrow, Tuesday April 7, at 4:05p.m. – a later start-time chosen to accommodate fans that would likely be at work or in school tomorrow. The Opening-Day festivities will also be postponed until Tuesday. Lucchino explained they had left Tuesday open in case of this very situation. A city known for volatile weather patterns, the Boston Red Sox last had to postpone the opening-day game in 2003.
Tickets for today’s game will still be good on Tuesday.
