13 people were reported dead in the town Binghamton, New York after a 42 year-old gunman took 41 hostages in the American Civic Association building. Before taking his own life he killed and wounded more than 20 people, making it the worst killings the town had ever seen.
The American Civic Association, the place where immigrants go for citizenship help, interpreters and other federal aid, had never encountered this type of situation. Local residents were shocked and some even evacuated there apartment buildings and neighboring schools during the standoff.
What lasted around 2 hours seemed like forever with many of the hostages who made it out alive. Some exited the building wearing white sheets and others in stretchers as more than 12 hostages were reported wounded. The gunman who has yet to be identified, is said to be of Asian descent.
