Former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich was indicted today. He was charged with attempting to sell off President Barack Obama’s former Senate seat as well as for lying to FBI agents, partaking in a corrupt billion dollar state pension scheme, and illegally pressuring an Illinois congressman to donate campaign funds. The 19-count indictment was handed out to Blagojevich and five others by a federal grand jury.
16 of the indictments are for Blagojevich alone. These charges also include: conspiracy, wire fraud, extortion, and racketeering. The charges are not just from recent activity either. According to the report, Blagojevich’s corruption problems started in 2002, the year he took office. And interestingly enough, the man he then replaced – the corrupt former Governor George Ryan – is now sitting in prison for his offenses. And with Blagojevich likely to be soon joining him, things do not look go for Illinois politicians. Especially their Governors.
Not surprisingly this spells the end to Blago’s once promising political career. Believe it or not, only four short years ago he was seen as a possible Presidential candidate. Things never worked out of course, and he spent the election season on the sidelines trying to dodge his own political problems.
Blagojevich is currently in Disney World with his family.
