5. Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
Who doesn’t miss Paul Newman already? The guy was a genius. His mustache, which he “swore” he “had to wear” in the movie (apparently him and the studio fought over it), is legendary. Somewhere between Uncle Stu and Undercover Cop. It worked, and Paul Newman once again got it right before we all did.

4.George Clooney in O Brother Where Art Thou
Ah. It’s obviously influenced by Clark Gable, but there’s something reminiscent of John Waters here. It’s straddling the line between camp and classic, much like Clooney’s career. Can we say mustaches are true-life fortune tellers? I think we can.

3. Sam Elliot (in everything)
Sam Elliot is to mustaches what midgets are to comedy. They make them so awesome that it hurts.

2. Daniel Day Lewis in There Will Be Blood
How could this not scare you? He made a “Distinguished 1910 Man Mustache” into a symbol of total evil. That takes a LOT of effort. Or none, as it may seem. He abandoned his child. He abandoned his boy. But he did not abandon his mustache.

1. Burt Reynolds in Smokey & The Bandit
Now, when one has a mustache, it’s all about how you wear it. You can’t just walk into a room and go “yup, that’s me”. You have to KNOW you are wearing a mustache. But you can’t let people know you know. Without a mustache, Burt was a good actor but no leading man (can you honestly remember that much of The Longest Yard?), but with the mustache, he ruled from Georgia to Texas.

I have to say, Sam Elliot wins this one hands down. Some good contenders, but he's got it pitch-perfect. Honorable Mention? Burt Reynolds

Wow... how can you have a post devoted to mustaches without Tom Selleck... okay... so Magnum P.I. was a television show... but don't tell me you forgot about Quigley Down Under! Burt Reynolds as #1 is good though.

Your pic of Paul Newman w/ mustache looks a lot like Robert Redford.
