Upside Of A Down Economy: Crocs To Go Out Of Business

Crocs – the shoe for the kind of person who thinks books are too wordy, or thinks that putting something on your feet that doesn’t make you look like an asylum inmate is for other people – has recently posted that their financial future may not be looking so bright.

Which is great. Because now people can go back to wearing proper shoes. And don’t give me that crap about “non skid” or “comfortable” or even “feet could breathe”. You’re not 4. You’re allowed to have laces and buckles and things that are confusing to other species on your feet. You’re allowed to buy grown-up person shoes. I don’t care if they’re comfortable. They make you look like a low-functioning elf.

From the report: The company said it is in discussion to replace its current revolving credit facility, which matures on April 2, but if it cannot secure additional financing and continues to lose money, “we may be unable to maintain a level of liquidity necessary to continue operating our business,”

Not even Mario Batali – who refuses to take off his orange Crocs – can really get away with wearing them. Not even Jared Leto – who has been sporting a pair of silver(!) Crocs – can get away with wearing them. Crocs are the bane of human existence and should be outlawed already if they were not about to go out of business. One day, people will look back and say “wow. those things suuuure looked terrible”. Much like the powdered wig, the fake mole, and the fact that no-one bathed in the 1700’s, future generations will look back and say “Those rubber shoes with the holes in them were for upper middle class people? What the f**k? Was that really necessary?”. It’s not like people who needed them could really get them, either. Not like you saw hobos wandering the streets in the affordable rubber shoes. Because a) they had friggin holes in them and b) I’d rather wear a boot with a floppy sole, too, if I was given the choice. Crocs are the single worst thing to come out of fashion in the 2000’s. We are not all Danish people from the future. We are not all Lilliput people, toiling away in the bubble gum mines in our brightly colored fancy rubber shoes.

i don’t think anyone who wears them think they look ‘good’ per se. they just don’t care. or they care more about comfort, skid-free, etc. etc.

that said, i had an english professor (who read! a lot!) who wore these pretty sportingly. and non-ironically too. i admired him.

  2. dan uyemura March 27, 2009 - 11:59 am

    RIP Crocs.

    Die! Die! Die!

  4. Kirk Skodis March 27, 2009 - 1:34 pm

And while you’re at not dressing like a 6-yr-old, stop wearing baseball caps, oversized anything, and most of all, flip-flops to anything that’s not a baseball game, a prison, or the beach.

  5. Stuart Thompson March 27, 2009 - 2:36 pm

Hurray! Death to crocs, flip-flops and other shoe-pidity.

  6. Laurent Sa March 27, 2009 - 11:58 pm

What? No more Crocs? You must be kidding. Mine survived the monsoon, a cyclone and all kinds of rough treatment. I’ve been living in the tropical forest of South India for the past 5 months, and I would not have survived without them! I’d like to see you here with your namby-pamby buckles and shoelaces!!! Do you know how many times a day you have to take off your shoes in India? Entering people’s homes, stores, temples, etc. NO CROCS, NO WAY.

Who told this immature flame-baiting troll that he could write a news story? Rule #1: you shouldn’t combine an opinion piece with actual reporting (unless you’re looking for a job a Fox News). Do you really think they are the bane of human existence? Not war, poverty, rape, or any other number of horrendous things? And no I don’t wear Crocs, or have an opinion one way or another except that what other people is their own business.

  8. chris March 28, 2009 - 1:06 am

Headlines for hits… You could get a job at Gizmodo. Hobos? The 50s called, they want their “lingo” back.

  9. Greg Retkowski March 28, 2009 - 8:52 am

How can you take something you make in China for 25 cents, sell it for 30 dollars and lose enough money to go out of business?

If they are so bad at cashflow management then I suppose the deserve to go bankrupt.

  10. Crock This March 28, 2009 - 6:30 pm

Get Serious… It’s a free country, at least for now. People can buy what they want and wear what they want. Get over yourself!

You do realize they make more shoes than just the bright colored clog kind, right? Or did you not do enough research that you get that? They have some great normal colored flip flops.

As far as looking like a low functioning elf, I would rather look like one that write like one.

  11. Ned Hepburn March 28, 2009 - 10:53 pm

for all the people that are sending incredibly rude comments, take a look at this.

    http://www.bloggingstocks.com/2009/03/19/crocs-auditor-raises-a-red-flag/

and yes, Crocs look awful. buy sandals or something and look like a grown up.

  12. Denton March 29, 2009 - 6:39 pm

How can anyone defend Crocs? You are right here, they are embarrassing. Maybe if you are a line cook, or if you are in a rain forest or something… Otherwise, you look like a moron wearing them. Period. Good riddance. You people who defend them probably wear cargo shorts too.

  13. April March 30, 2009 - 11:58 pm

I don’t know how crocs would stay in business anyway with so many knock-offs around the world. I’ve seen fake crocs for sale in Canada, Spain, Korea and so on. At least we can thank them for an ugly but comfortable idea.

  14. Dave Nicholson April 1, 2009 - 6:45 pm

What in the world would we do if we didn’t have people like Ned Hepburn to tell us how to dress?

  15. Kayla April 2, 2009 - 3:51 pm

Hooray! Finally. I don’t give a care if those are comfortable. There are TONS of other shoes out there that are just as comfortable, but don’t make you look like a dumb ass. Buy a pair of sneakers people!

  16. !Croc 'o Sh!t! April 3, 2009 - 7:57 am

If there is only 1 good thing that the failing economy has done, it’s gotten RID OF CROCS! Praise the lord and pass the ammunition! That forsaken footwear has plagued humanity for far too long! Now the time has come to cleanse the world of that plastic filth!

  17. Austin April 6, 2009 - 4:55 pm

Crocs were awful, they made me raged at the disgusting sight of them, and it was usually some fowl degenerate rocking these rubber atrocity’s. Sure smart people wore them, but what self respecting being would? As for those insulting the witter, try getting the stick out of your ass, this article is funny, you think it is not professional? Neither are your beloved Crocs. All news should be as cynical and sarcastic as this, at least you could get a laugh about how terrible our world is.

  18. Null Object April 8, 2009 - 1:06 am

    Syringe Magnets

  19. R. April 12, 2009 - 2:07 pm

I found this via a site I frequent quite often. While I can’t stand Crocs a number of people I know absolutely love them. They don’t make them look like children, in fact the ones who look like children are the immature imbeciles who tell people what to wear and how to look like a grown up. Get over yourself.

  20. RDean April 13, 2009 - 1:08 pm

Crocs are fugly (f@*king ugly) … but they do serve their purpose. My mom is 70 years old and diabetic. She lives in Crocs. I don’t tell her how ugly they are and that I would never wear them … because they are good for her feet and she wears her shoes all the time (an important thing for diabetics to do). BTW, my sister is a nurse and, being on her feet most of the day, she is all about comfort, but she wouldn’t be caught dead in Crocs.

  21. Bill April 27, 2009 - 4:11 pm

It must be nice to rip a product and then refuse to acknowledge it’s benefits.

  22. WAS April 28, 2009 - 8:08 pm

It’s amazing how people are judged by the shoes they wear.

  23. amt April 30, 2009 - 4:31 pm

dude, think about the important issues, man

  24. C May 7, 2009 - 1:45 pm

may be you are a low functioning elf…who cares what people wear. There is a saying in the hiking community, “hike your own hike”. You should apply this here. Let people do what they want without your criticisim!

  25. Lily May 8, 2009 - 10:43 am

    Like I said before…

May you never have to be on your feet for 8 hours straight. People who post these ridiculous rants about Crocs are usually the same people who love, LOVE places like American Apparel and like to wear old lady jewelry with neon tights.

Honestly. Stop judging people on what they wear. Grow up.

  26. Cliff May 9, 2009 - 11:06 pm

That was the funniest thing I’ve read in awhile; I practically had tears in my eyes by the time I reached the bubble gum mines. Hysterical.

  27. Jen May 10, 2009 - 8:35 pm

All you Croc haters out there … whatever!! Ok – I do admit they aren’t the best shoe for adults but as a mother of a 5 and 2 year old I have to say that Crocs are the best little summer-outdoor-camping-water shoe ever invented!! Long live the Croc!!

  28. EEdwin May 13, 2009 - 12:05 am

I always wear them in my large animal surgery. All the horrific bodily fluids that gush out of an opened bovine abdomen can just be hosed off and flushed down the drain – instead of ruining your shoes or pooling up in your boots.

  29. Swindler May 13, 2009 - 6:40 pm

Please, if you have size 13 fff you might understand!! Fashion, who gives a damn. Comfort comfort comfort, have you tried winter crocs? Talk about metrosexual, you are a borish snob if you care about others fashion choices. F U you I’m stocking up on crocs

  30. emi May 31, 2009 - 11:45 am

crocs are a great option to wear, they have the comfort and the tech, when i first started to wear’em every body told me that those shoes sucks and that they’re dangerous and stuff, now all of’em are wearing’em so i know that u will too

  31. Jill McGee June 25, 2009 - 7:15 am

In my opinion Crocs should start pushing their Cypress line more and get more colors available. These are the most comfortable high heels I have ever owned. I wear them everywhere – including gardening. And I think they are just as cute as anything available in a casual sandal. PLUS I can think of a bunch of ways to dress them up. I am so hoping that they don’t go out of business. I just bought two pairs in black because I’ve noticed that they aren’t restocking them.

  32. Hilda July 16, 2009 - 10:24 pm

Please Crocs CEO’s please consider staying open for business a bit longer till your loyal customers can stock up on their favorite cros.
My husband recently had major back surgery , fusion, laminectomy, disectomy and 2 rods and titanium screws . Recovery has been slow and painful. Add to that problems with edema in legs and neuropathy in feet, his only relief is wearing your “Winter Crocs” closed toe/open back. Has not been able to wear any other shoe or tennis shoes or slippers. “Winter Crocs are the ONLY shoe he can comfortably walk in since his surgery. They have been unbelievably helpful. We were also going to purchase your dress crocs on line. I am sorry the economy has forced this decision for your company and your employees.
As for myself, I have issues with my arches and wear the summer open toe and back year round inside my home and summer for gardening. Only slipon shoe I wear that helps with back fatigue and sensitive feet. Well as you can see I can’t say enough good things about Crocs could go on & on. In our family if our feet aren’t happy we are not happy . Please give your customers enough time to stock up with some timeline of last day to buy if it defintely comes to that . Wish I had known years ago about Crocs

  33. fuckyou July 17, 2009 - 7:05 pm

OMFG! I hate people who are so fucking consumed with culture they revilement individuals for wearing a fucking shoe they think is comfortable. I mean, who gives a SHIT! Why should everyone adhere to what society feels normal or fashionable should be? FUCK YOU!!! The writer of this article and those who share the same mundane sentiment should really get a life or die!

  34. Tamara July 21, 2009 - 8:55 pm

omg!!!! am going to have to stock up my doctor told me i should be wareing crocs for the health oh my feet due to the foot problams i had, and they worked better then anything i have ever tryed. i dont care what they look like it just happends that they are comfie, wonderful colours and stylesh.

  35. Sub Driver July 22, 2009 - 1:55 pm

Am I suppose to care about the opinion of a sniveling asshole!

  36. Tony Berkel July 27, 2009 - 12:53 pm

I bought a pair of Crocs a few months ago and I have to say that I just loved them! Very comfortable, very durable, and made to last. I can’t really say that about a pair of $30 dollar shoes with laces.

Sorry that they are going out of business. But I have mine !!!!!

  37. Shea August 1, 2009 - 6:44 am

I thought the article was funny! I reserve the right to judge people at my discrection, mostly because I find it hilarious and helpful in weeding out those I have nothing in common with. I have no opposition whatsoever to anyone who wants to wear the ugliest shoe on the planet- knock yourself out! In exchange, I will make note of the fact that any man in Crocs instantly loses his masculinity and becomes indistinguishable from an infant. Are ya’ gonna’ make a move on a sexy lady with yer’ big, rubber feet glaring at her? My mother loves them, and she looks hideous in them. My favorite: Couples in Crocs! It says to me, “Hey, we’re together now and have stepped off the fashion train forever! No one wants us and we don’t care!” Second favorite: Women in cute skirts with Flintstone feet thanks to Crocs- instant cankles! I’m happy they help people feel better- it means I can endlessly amuse myself at their expense. Live long and prosper, Crocs!

  38. hiker August 4, 2009 - 2:56 am

Ok, I am an avid backpacker and when you finished hiking a 14 mile day and covered two peaks you tell me what to wear: an enclosed sneaker where one can develop foot fungus or an open show that can let your feet breath. Sandals don’t work in the back country sense they don’t provide any protection for your toes. Yes they might be ugly but they have a very practical use, an extremely light weight design makes and some protection. A backpacker’s dream if they are a minimalist. SO PACK THE HELL OFF!

  39. Brian August 5, 2009 - 4:35 pm

I hope Crocs aren’t dead because I adore them. If I step in dog poop, I simply rinse them off and I do that often because I operate a petsitting company. If you get them dirty, I simply wash them off. If they are wet, they dry within minutes or simply wipe them off and you are good to go. You can’t do that with ordinary shoes! I walk 8 hours a day and I have never had such comfortable footwear. Silly looking? Maybe, but they are functional and practical! Long Live Crocs! If I had enough money, I would buy the company!

  40. RMO August 6, 2009 - 2:07 pm

You all are morons . . .who gives a rats ass what kind of shoe you wear. If I want to spend $30 for a pair of shoes that make me look like an idiot. . .WHO CARES!!! I look like the idiot, not you. So go wear your Sperrys and Rockports, and Designer crap (don’t forget to pay your monthly online porn bill, losers) and I’ll be happy in my crocs. Have a good day.

  41. Judy Slater August 8, 2009 - 1:52 pm

Please find a way NOT to go out of business, Crocs is the only shoes I wear. Honestly!!! I don’t know what I’ll do if you go out of business.
Just as usual, something everyone should wear goes out of business. I am praying for you not to have to go out of business.
Is there something I can do…………..? Please let me know….
    All my best Judy Slater

  42. Danielle August 9, 2009 - 11:07 am

I think that talking shit is definitely something my six year old daughter does and she loves the crocs. So don’t dis on how people dress and what they like because weather or not they are dressing like they are still in elementary you are acting like you are still in elementary Worry about how you are dressing yourself and not how other people want to dress.

  43. joe September 11, 2009 - 6:23 pm

you are lame, Nothing wrong with crocs and they are not for 4 year olds. you are way too old for your age dude.

  44. Vicki October 1, 2009 - 2:32 pm

These are the only shoes I can wear as I have severe nerve damage in my feet due to diabetes. I do not care how they look as long as I am able to walk in shoes without being in severe pain. Maybe you should ask yourself what you would do to be pain free. I feel sorry for all of you that put someone down for the shoes they wear.

  45. Jesse October 7, 2009 - 9:38 pm

Crocs are the best! Thankfully they are still afloat! CROCS FOR LIFE!

  46. Shell October 28, 2009 - 2:19 pm

Wow your posting really ticked me off!! I mean honestly I have to say that you love being an asshole. Ya know I know that they are ugly, but here is the thing. I have a prosthetic on my left foot and have never been able to find a pair of tennis shoes etc that I could be comfortable in. Thank god I ran across crocs brand and have been wearing them for the past 4 years. My back doesn’t hurt as bad, as well as my feet. I have fibromyalgia, chronic myofacial pain. Which pretty much means I hurt all the time.
Crocs however ugly they are, are the most comfortable pair of shoes that I own. You are terrible for writing this and I guarantee once we put a pair on your damn feet and you wore them for a friggin week you wouldn’t be able live without them.

More or less if you think that we need to wear something else that makes us comfortable, easy to wash off etc, then why don’t you take your genius mind and come out with a product that we will all buy? Something that eases our foot pain, and when we are in such bad pain with our bodies that we can simply slide into. Odds are I bet you can’t, or that you yourself don’t have any foot, back, body problems. Well until you do you need to keep your thoughts to yourself.

Again, I really hope that crocs don’t go out of business. I don’t know what I am going to do because I honestly have not found any other shoe that gives me the comfort the way that they do.
