HBO Unapologetic Over ‘Big Love’ Scene

HBO is trying not to make a slightly awkward situation worse by not apologizing for airing a sacred Mormon religious ceremony depicted on the show.

The scene depicts a revered ceremony involving the entrance into the Mormon church. Actress Jeanne Tripplehorn is the lucky actress to go through with it. There’s secret handshakes and veils and people walking around in all white. It’s much like a dream sequence from a Polanski movie. To describe it would be rather difficult, and HBO pulled it from online so I guess you’ll need to use your imagination.

Its mostly just a quick handshake and a veil and a bit of crying at the end. Sounds not unlike my Prom. Well, The Church Of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints is livid. As of today the higher ups of the Church have not released a full statement, but according to a number of reports a lot of elder Mormons are mad that the scene was even shown at all, saying that it was “completely unnecessary” and “downright rude”. Interestingly enough, the whole scene was helped to be created by an ex Mormon who taught others how to do such events Brent D. Payne, who describes the finished scene as “quite accurate”. You’d think for the guy who told the writers how to make it it would be “very accurate”. So it goes.

This isn’t the first time the Mormon church has gotten upset with HBO over Big Love. They objected to a story line involving the courting of a “fourth wife”, something that was “immoral, as they slept together before marriage”. Well, I mean, not to use a 1980’s stand up comedy cliche punch-line, but if you can’t try the merchandise out before you buy it…

The Church Of Jesus Christ & Latter Day Saints (LDC for short) is calling for Mormons to boycott HBO. This is particularly ironic, as after the LDC put some twenty million dollars towards the defeat of Prop 8 (making gay marriage legal in California), they caused an uproar over the fact that their opposition was calling to boycott Mormon businesses. This sounds shady.

The show stars Bill Paxton as a guy married to three women. Unlike, say, the mindfuck of sight and sound that is Entourage, the show is slowly paced but critics say this works well to the shows advantage. The show has few laughs. And after Sunday’s episode, they could really use a few.

As someone not too familiar with the LDS Church, I found that particular episode of Big Love to be quite fascinating. Really interesting to see all the white veils & cloth, the ceremony, etc. Seemed dream like.

This article is riddled with inaccuracies.

Let’s start with the name of the church – the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — or LDS for short.

By the way it is (LDS) for short not (LDC). And the church only donated 1.4% of the money against prop. 8. So isn’t there a lot of other people, people with money who you should go after other then the LDS church. We have all been told lies about the extent of their involvement. It smacks of mob mentality and outright ignorance of the facts. By the way “as if it mattered” I’m not LDS. However I have great respect for their church, and I know plenty of them.
Maybe we should check on the catholic church’s contribution to prop. 8, or any of a dozen other’s. It was the will of the people a true sign that democracy works. Most people don’t want gay marriage that is why it failed. Seems to me like the system works fine. Too bad people for gay marriage didn’t organize sooner. God bless america.
