It’s St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th of March; all of Ireland and many parts of North America are gearing up to celebrate. An apt opportunity to look up and enjoy some beautiful Irish sayings. There’s something about the Irish that captivates; I mean to the casual observer how are they different from the Scot and the Brit? It’s revealed in their sayings, the Irish proverbs that reflect their attitude to life.
Here are some for you to read and ruminate on -
- The Irish ignore anything they can’t drink or punch.
- You’ve got to do your own growing, no matter how tall your grandfather was.
- If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, then you’re lucky enough.
- Beware of people who dislike cats.
- It is better to be a coward for a minute than dead for the rest of your life.
- Put silk on a goat and it is still a goat.
- Marry a mountain girl and you marry the whole mountain.
- Everyone is nice till the cow gets into the garden.
- Wherever you go and whatever you do, May the luck of the Irish be there with you.
- The Irish – Be they kings, or poets, or farmers, They’re a people of great worth, They keep company with the angels, And bring a bit of heaven here to earth.
