Don Imus, best known as an incendiary morning talk show host, Marlboro Man resembler, and the man who called the Rutgers women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos,” informed his radio audience this morning that he has stage II prostate cancer. The “shock jock” however is optimistic, saying “The prognosis couldn’t be better” and that with the help of his doctors he “will beat it.”
Now, there is nothing fun about prostate cancer (ask the men in your life). It is deadly and is currently ranked as the second highest cause of death for American men. Still, there is some good news. Prostate cancer is very treatable so long as it’s detected early on. This is why doctors are always recommending an annual prostate exam, and also why you should listen. Especially for men over the age of 40, African American, or who have a history of prostate cancer in their family.
Stage II prostate cancer, according to Cancer.gov, is “cancer that began in the prostate…but has not grown outside the prostate.” So, for as long as the cancer remains within the prostate, invasive surgery or radiation can work to eliminate it.
For Imus’s sake, let’s hope it has not spread.
