You may know David Hayter as the voice of Solid Snake in all those Metal Gear Solid games, but you might not have known that he’s also an accomplished screenwriter, with movies like the first X-men movie to his credit. In fact, he’s also a co-writer of Watchmen, possibly the most controversial comic-to-screen adaptation in history. Due to what some are calling a poor performance in theaters during its first weekend, Hayter has penned an open letter to geeks everywhere on HardcoreNerdity.com, asking for a second viewing.
“If the film made you think. Or argue with your friends. If it inspired a debate about the nature of man, or vigilante justice, or the horror of Nixon abolishing term limits. If you laughed at Bowie hanging with Adrian at Studio 54, or the Silhouette kissing that nurse. Please go see the movie again next weekend.”
As a huge fan of the original 12-issue miniseries (which is what it was before it was collected into the graphic novel), I was already planning on seeing it again in the theater, but hearing Solid Snake reach out like this makes me even more sure that I’m doing the right thing. Look, let’s face it: this movie was never for the non-fan. No one else could possibly care about this — it’s far too complex, with non-big name stars at the front, and not nearly enough standard superhero action to please the plebian moviegoer.
However, my fellow geeks: you all know just what kind of Herculean task it was just to get this thing made in the first place, on all levels: production, adaptation, marketing … and not least of all, getting the studio to agree to it in the first place! It’s killing me to think that it might not even break even on its costs. We may never see another film like this again, because there IS no other property that exists on this scale. So, if for no other reason than to give back to the creators who had the balls to make this movie, I urge you all: see it again! Snake? SNAKE? SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE!
