Cute Ambassadors From The Land Of The Rising Fun!

cuteambassadorsJapan calls to me. From thousands of miles away, its pop culture — itself composed of thousands of subcultures — just screams out to be picked up, held in both arms, and fed candy. There’s literally nothing that Japan could do that would surprise me at this point, and this latest bit of news just makes me want to adopt it as my second homeland that much more.

Tokyo’s Foreign Ministry has selected three young women to act as official “Cute Ambassadors” to travel abroad and spread the gospel of Cute to the world. These girls are to speak at various events and give notice that the Japanese are serious about their devotion to all things cute.

“We want people abroad to know these kind of people exist in Japan and to feel close to them,” says Tsutomu Nakagawa, the head of the cultural affairs division. I’m just picturing the chaos surrounding these girls as they’re ogled by stuffy politicos at these top-level super-important events. I imagine someone will try to ask a question about global politics, only to be rebuffed by a perfectly-tilted head sporting an ear-to-ear grin and a syrupy-sweet voice squealing “Hi-hiiiiii!” Man … this could be the greatest thing to happen to world politics since the invention of deodorant.

This is not to say that things won’t get done. On the table: increasing legislation against tentacle monsters and incorporation of the Yatta Dance as an Olympic event.

Great idea! I wonder who we could get in the US for this position? Maybe Pam from The Office? Eh.. probably the wrong kind of cute. I'm having trouble here, surely we have someone cuter than Hannah Montana, yeah?
