riddickI loved the hell out of Pitch Black. It was a great combination of science fiction and horror, with a fantastic palette, great photography, an interesting cast of characters who never once did something immersion-breakingly stupid, and of course one of the greatest anti-heroes of our generation in Richard B. Riddick. So it was with barely-suppressed excitement that I awaited the sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, hoping for more intense action with dark psychological overtones.

Instead, I got… The Chronicles of Riddick. A movie that approached some interesting ideas, but backed away from them and instead offered Riddick-as-superhero, taking away nearly everything that made him great in the first film. So when I hear that a third Riddick film is in the making, with the same director and star, I can’t help but feel a little trepidation.

Vin Diesel dropped the first hint that the movie is in development in this interview with video game website Gamespot. “It is underway and I almost think it’s a coincidence that we haven’t heard anything, that there hasn’t been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie … David Twohy is finishing up the next script.” The main part of the interview was about the new Riddick game, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, which looks pretty amazing, even though it is mostly the old Riddick game, Escape From Butcher Bay, but with updated graphics and some new gameplay. I’d like to think that the movie team has learned something from the second movie’s reviews and will hew the new movie closer to what the games present, which is a lot of tense, close-quarters action in dark and moody environments. It’s not too hard to pin down what makes Riddick great — now let’s see if those in charge get it.

There’s currently no new information on this new project, but we’ll keep our ears open for you.

“It is underway and I almost think it’s a coincidence that we haven’t heard anything, that there hasn’t been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie..." coincidence, right.
