The new Winstar M4 USB networking server is another of those devices that converges technologies to offer convenient networking. What the Winstar server actually does is that it allows users to share one of the following USB computer peripherals over a wireless network – an external hard drive or flash drive or memory card reader, USB webcam, USB speaker, or USB Multi-Function Printer (MFP) from any machine on a Wi-Fi network.
It open up exciting possibilities for use even if there are only three PCs in a home environment. Wireless means less clutter and it does save space on individual hard drives.
The catch here is that the M4 has only one USB port so at a given time you can access only one peripheral on the network. For greater connectivity you will need a USB hub.
Plug the USB device to the Winstar M4 and connect the M4 to a wireless router with an Ethernet cable. That’s all you need to do! It works smoothly for a Windows Vista environment.
Maybe if the guys had thrown in USB file-sharing and something like “anywhere-access” from the Internet to the peripherals, that would’ve really been something. But I guess what it offers for $33 / piece is good anyway.
