Apple’s Safari is a distant third when it comes to browser popularity. Indeed if it weren’t for the fact that Safari is the default browser for iPhone and Mac, Apple Safari wouldn’t be anywhere in the reckoning in the browser race. However; the new Safari 4 Web browser available for download for Mac OS X and Windows XP and Vista is garnering a lot of praise for its list of features as well as performance.
Computerworld has a beautiful detailed review of the Safari 4 browser.
Safari renders CSS scripts in 7 ms and takes 54 ms to load the JavaScript. Compare this with corresponding IE7 figures – 131 ms render time and 555 ms load time.
The “Top Sites” feature greets you when you first launch Safari 4, its a grid of most visited sites. So, no need to bookmark your top sites, open a new tab and click on the site you wish to visit. You can create new tabs and even pull them off on to separate windows. In order to present a minimalist and uncluttered look, Apple has done away with the reload button and the blue bar that signaled site loading. The address bar and the search bar both feature auto completion.
