The Oscars have come and gone and now for the most looked-forward to activity – dissecting the fashion sense of those we usually trip over to emulate. Oscar dresses excite comments, envy, awe, wry smiles, dirty looks, and all the emotions that go in the making of those potboilers and dramas.
For those who don’t know, a lot rides on these dresses as far as the fashion houses are concerned. Millions of dollars of free publicity are at stake here. The Armanis, Saint Laurents’ and Gallianos have their publicity machinery running in overdrive trying to pique public interest in what the stars are going to turn up in.
Men, by and large, do not really have the fashion IQ to really appreciate the ladies’ wear on show. And the ladies know that. The dilemma is ingeniously resolved through elegant skin show or figure-hugging gowns that guarantee eyeballs.
Anyway, the collective jury on Oscar dresses has decided that asymmetrical and strapless gowns were the flavor of the evening. According to the knowledgeable folk that inhabit the various fashion portals online Penelope Cruz in her 1950s Balmain off-white lace and tulle full-skirted dress looked sweet and old fashioned with the dress being a little too much for her petite form.
Angelina Jolie in her strapless black outfit didn’t impress the hordes looking for something new, something that they haven’t seen, something in which style and fashion coalesce to satisfy both their sartorial and basic instincts.
