5. Grey’s Papaya, NYC

This hot dog mecca in New York is so good that I’ve known at least two people that have “missed their flights” only to give me a call from Grey’s telling me I need to go there. I did once a couple years ago and was pretty impressed but a little underwhelmed. I suppose one should go there with zero expectations.

4. Underdog, Chicago

Maybe I’m just super biased, but this hot dog joint (located underneath a Mexican restaurant, which is itself located underneath very busy L-train tracks) is one of my all time favorites. It’s open 24 hours and boasts a $2 fries-and-hot-dog deal that is unbeatable. It’s quite possibly the best place to stumble into drunk at 4am.Granted, it’s a total shithole, but unforgettable all the same.

3. Bacon Wrapped Hot Dog, LA

To hell with Pinks, the line-around-the-block place on Melrose. That places hot dogs are dry and taste like poo… you’re MUCH better off waiting until nightfall and walking around anywhere where there’s a few bars on the same block. You’ll be bound to find one of these street vendors selling bacon wrapped hot dogs for about $3 a pop.

2. The Varisty, Atlanta

This place is to hot dogs what Jerusalem is to religion: say what you will, but you have to at least go there once to say you’ve been there. I can’t even describe the amount of hot dogs they have there, it’s staggering. I was incredibly drunk the one time I went there but sweet Jesus, that hot dog was amazing. And the service is amazing too, with some of the nicest people who have ever made a hot dog serve them to me, besides…

1. Hot Doug’s, Chicago

… Hot Doug’s. Hot Dougs does hot dogs. But it doesn’t just stop there: stop in any given day and you’ll find alligator hot dogs, ostrich hot dogs, veal hot dogs, any kind of hot dog imaginable. It’s truly an adventure you won’t find anywhere else and you could spend hours there if you wanted to, trying all the different hot dogs. It’s an adventure… taking the hot dog to a whole new level beyond just street food.
