Good news for troops stationed in Iraq: the army is lifting its ban on alcohol in combat zones for the Super Bowl this Sunday. Each soldier will be allowed two 12-ounce beers to drink during the game. No word yet on what brand of suds our service men and women will be enjoying.
The lifted ban on alcohol is a rarity for the armed forces. Under normal circumstances, any U.S. soldier found drinking, possessing or selling alcohol can be court-marshaled. Being in Iraq doesn’t make things any easier to drink, either. While alcohol isn’t illegal in the country, it is banned by Islam, and troops are instructed to be mindful of the nation’s laws and customs.
This story should once again bring to mind just how much our troops sacrifice to protect America. Millions of us take for granted the fact that on Sunday, we will have the freedom to watch the Super Bowl in the comfort of our own homes, something that may not be possible without the brave men and women serving overseas. So this Sunday, while you’re watching the big game with friends and family, take a moment to think of the troops. Here’s to them enjoying a good game, and a good brew!
