Glute

A glute doesn’t just help us walk and keep our lower backs free from pain; it is the reason many of us are around. I mean, glutes or hips (the sashaying ones) have been used to send mating signals from time immemorial.

Just like animals sweat, men perspire, and women glisten; animals have a rump, men have glutes, and women have a derriere / hips / ass / booty. Please… this is about language and our perceptions, am not being a chauvinist here.

Strictly speaking when we say a glute, we are talking about the three muscles that make up the buttocks – the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus. Together these three muscles help the majority of us walk and run and give a lucky few like Jennifer Lopez and Vida Guerra their tickets to fame.

Okay, here’s a big glutes myth busted. Jogging does not help build hips. These muscles are the strongest in our body and are of the fast-twitch variety. Which means a steady slow jog does nothing for them. This said, I have found that jogging uphill really has me working my butt off, literally and figuratively. Squats, floor hip extensions, and step ups are some exercises that you can easily do at home to work your glutes.
