2008 was a great year for Lil Wayne. “Tha Carter III” sold a million copies the week it was released. It went double platinum, selling 2.88 million copies in total. The album’s first single, “Lollipop,” was his first #1 single. He also released a couple mix tapes and appeared on albums by Jay-Z, Kanye West, T.I., Usher, Fall Out Boy, David Banner, Mike Jones, T-Pain and The Game.
So how does Weezy plan on retaining the title of ”Greatest Rapper Alive” in 2009? He’s going to put out a rock album! “Prom Queen” is the first single released from his upcoming album Rebirth.
This move shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone. Lil Wayne has been busting out his guitar during concerts since last year. He even performed with Kid Rock at the Country Music Awards and most recently he appeared on Kevin Rudolf’s single “Let It Rock.”
Is this career suicide? Probably not, people are already eating this shit up. But I’m sorry, “Prom Queen” is a mess of a song. At best it sounds like sub par Incubus. There’s no real riff, no hook and the chorus is super annoying. Unless Rebirth has “A Milli” prt. 2 on it, I’ll be passing on this one. Instead, I’ll be patiently waiting for the Lil Wayne/Juelz Santana collaboration, I Can’t Feel My Face.
“Prom Queen” will be streaming on Lil Wayne’s official MySpace starting on January 27th. Rebirth is due out April 7th.
