Andy Roddick, the A-Rod of tennis, has reached the semis of the Australian Open as a combination of Roddick’s red hot serve, sizzling forehands and soaring temperatures combined to sap defending champion’s Novak Djokovic’s will who withdrew the competition in the fourth set, trailing 7-6 (7/3), 4-6, 2-6, 1-2. Temperatures were in the mid-thirties.
That’s hot but not hot enough to force a withdrawal from a top level athlete, especially in an event where temperatures can hit 40 degrees Celsius.
Andy Roddick has his work cut out from here; he is set to meet the winner of the Roger Federer / Juan Martin Del Potro match. All indications point to a Federer / Roddick match and a Federer win.
However, Roddick is no mug with the racquet. Roddick is owner of the fastest serve on the planet, some say in the history of the game. He won his first grand slam in his 12th try while it took Agassi 18 attempts.
Some more Roddick trivia. Andy has dated Mandy Moore and is the first male tennis player to have hosted Saturday Night Live. Andy may be a hunk now sending girls into raptures when he exposes his washboard abs while wiping sweat with his tee but he was a pipsqueak as a kid, so much that he lost a one-set match to Serena Williams when he was 10 years old, 6-1 if Serena is to be believed, though Roddick claims it was more like 6-4.
