Obama Retakes Oath

By The Manolith Team on January 21st, 2009

How’s this for an auspicious start or headline news that greets you when the celebrations have subsided – “Obama Retakes Oath“. Why?

Because he and Chief Justice John Roberts together managed to flub the 35-word oath. What actually happened was that Obama interrupted John Roberts in the midst of the oath-taking and the distracted Chief Justice lost track of the sequence of the oath; maybe the pressure of the situation got to him.

So Obama retakes oath and all those who cheered him have just that slight reason to feel a little cheated, maybe technically they did not witness history being made.

Barack Obama decided to retake the oath on Wednesday “very slowly” out of “abundance of caution” for constitutional concerns because one word “faithfully” was misplaced by John Roberts during the original swearing-in ceremony.

In order to avoid questions over the legality of him being the President, (some constitutional scholars actually wondered aloud if the oath taken on Tuesday was valid) Barack Obama and Chief Justice John Roberts got together once again and retook the oath Wednesday night in the Map Room of the White House.

However Obama is not the first U.S president to have fumbled the oath the first time round. In fact he’s the third one to do it after Calvin Coolidge and Chester Arthur.
