The Uncle Sam Diamond is the largest ever diamond discovered in America. The rough diamond, discovered in 1924 by W.O Bassum, weighed around 40.23 carats before it was cut twice. It took the shape of a 12.42 carat emerald after the second cutting. The Uncle Sam Diamond was discovered at Crater of Diamonds state park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas.
The diamond sold for $150,000 in 1971 and at present it is housed in the American Museum of Natural History. Of course as far as diamonds go the Uncle Sam Diamond comes nowhere close to the fabled diamonds that have come out of the mines in South Africa and of course India. Some of the all-time great diamonds include The Great Star of Africa which weighs a staggering 530.20 carats was mined in South Africa and the uncut piece weighed more than 3000 carats. The exceptionally pure 300 carat Orloff diamond was mined in India from where other fabulous diamonds such as The Regent and the Koh-i-noor have also been mined.
Diamonds are forever and they either bring great fortune or heap devastation upon their owner. There are scores of stories of businessmen losing everything personally and financially once they got a coveted piece of crystallized carbon in their possession.
