Come all ye faithful and learn about the Spear of Longinus. For the uninitiated, the spear was pierced into the side of Jesus Christ, as he stood crucified, by a Roman legionnaire Longinus in order to make sure that Jesus had died. Apparently, Hitler was obsessed by the spear, if conspiracy theorists are to be believed he was in possession of the spear and even today the “true” spear is with a secret Nazi society biding its time for a world takeover.
This powerful legend has driven Christian faith from the early days and there are several relics scattered around the world that are purportedly parts of this lance. The lance is also known as the Spear of Destiny, Holy Spear, Lance of Longinus, or Spear of Christ. In one of the earliest known incidents when the lance played a role in the affirmation of the Christian faith was when during the first Crusade in the 11th century, a Crusader Peter Bartholomew had a vision of St Andrew telling him the location of the Spear of Longinus and from there the Crusaders who were under pressure from the Moslem soldiers besieging the city of Antioch. The vision galvanized the Christian soldiers who won the day and saved the city.
