Manolith Salutes: R.I.P Creator Of The Hawaiian Shirt

Alas, it saddens me to report that the creator of one of the last fading signs of Bro-hood, the Hawaiian shirt – has moved on to the great Luau in the sky.

Yes, the Citizen Kane of tropical print Alfred Shaheen, had died at the ripe ol’ age of 86. The self-made many times over multi millionaire started making the fabled garment so American tourists could bring home “colorful but cheesy looking shirts and sundresses that would be cause for much amusement among friends”. Yes, the man capitalized on kitsch.

Basically, he made hundreds of millions of dollars on basically the same mental vein as your pog collection, or collection of Garfield mugs, or “that shelf of beer bottles from around the world” that that one dbag from college had.

That takes serious talent, and we bade him aloha (which means goodbye as well).
