The self-made many times over multi millionaire started making the fabled garment so American tourists could bring home “colorful but cheesy looking shirts and sundresses that would be cause for much amusement among friends”. Yes, the man capitalized on kitsch.
Basically, he made hundreds of millions of dollars on basically the same mental vein as your pog collection, or collection of Garfield mugs, or “that shelf of beer bottles from around the world” that that one dbag from college had.
