Sign of Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are not only an embarrassing problem, but sleeping on a mattress that suffers from infestation can cause painful and unsightly welts. Unfortunately, many hotels and resorts suffer from bed bugs, and most guests don’t recognize the problem until it is too late. By learning how to recognize the signs of bed bugs, you can avoid both the insult and injury that come with painful bed bug bites.

Bed bugs are a type of mite that prefer to make their home inside mattresses. Bed bugs feed on the blood and skin particles of human beings, which is why they prefer to live inside our furniture. They are nocturnal, which makes them hard to catch a glimpse of during the daytime. This has lead to a common misconception that bed bugs are invisible to the naked eye. This is simply not true! Bed bugs are very visible, measuring in at about 1/8 inch wide. They are brown to black in color, and shaped like a flattened oval.

Bed bugs can go for long periods of time without feeding, but they prefer to feed every 8 to 10 days. One of the sure signs of bed bugs is to wake up itching right around dawn. A bed bug’s bite cannot be felt until minutes or even hours later, and this often means you will feel the bite just as the daylight begins.

Physical signs of bedbugs to look for are red, raised welts. A typical bed bug attack will leave the sufferer with 3 to 6 welts several inches apart on one arm or leg. If the welts are on the back, the sufferer may have as many as 20 welts at a time. This is because bed bugs often choose to work on one limb at a time.

One of the biggest signs of bed bugs is to simply pull back the sheets on your bed in the middle of the night. If there is a bed bug infestation, you should be able to see the bed bugs gathering around the corners of the mattress and at the seams. They will immediately scatter when the sheets are pulled back. If you see bed bugs on your mattress, then it’s undoubtedly time to call the exterminators.
