Top Majors for Online Colleges

The top majors for online courses fall pretty much in line with the top majors for people pursuing Bachelor’s Degrees around the country in on campus programs, too. With the rising popularity of taking classes online, more and more people are discovering the benefits of getting an online education, so it follows that more and different courses of study are being offered.

You can earn an Associate Degree, Bachelor’s Degree and even a Master’s Degree online through hundreds and hundreds of different distance education programs. (And even a High School GED, before you start your college coursework.) Some of these programs are offshoots of top colleges around the country, while some schools are completely online and offer no on campus classes at all.

If you’re considering taking online courses to get your Associate Degree or work toward a Bachelor’s Degree, then the field is wide open. But the most popular majors for online courses right now are in the fields of computer science, business and education.

Computer science is hot everywhere, and with more and more of the world becoming increasingly dependent on computers that’s only going to continue. Industry leaders predict that more and more people will be employed in the field of computer science as computers take over many more tasks done manually, and become more sophisticated.

These complex computer systems need highly trained and skilled workers to program and maintain them, which is where computer science comes in. Within the field of computer science there are dozens of specialties so anyone considering this field should narrow down their interests. Some people work exclusively with database management, some are programmers and some work exclusively on web development. Almost every computer-related field can be trained for with online courses.

As popular as computer science, business is the major that many online students opt for. Business encompasses so many skills and sets of knowledge that it’s hard to go wrong when pursuing a degree if you include a business focus. There are entire programs that focus on one aspect such as business management or business administration, while others touch on several subsets of a business degree and offer a more broad education.

Business is an ideal major for those who already work in the business sector in some capacity. Working full time makes it difficult if not impossible to take traditional on-campus college courses, so taking the classes online makes perfect sense. Many students are taking courses to increase their earning power at work and to shift into a more advanced position.

Education is also a popular major with online colleges, with students training to work as teacher’s assistants and early childhood educators as well as working toward more advanced degrees in education. Because online training is so easy to fit into everyone’s schedule, many parents who work outside the home take courses in education so that they can get jobs within a school system and have a schedule that’s similar to their own children. This makes life a little easier and lets them train and get the experience for even more advanced jobs in the education field.
