Why Do It Yourself?

These days we’re all looking for areas we could cut back in our spending. And one area we can count on to cost more than we wished it would is the trip to the auto mechanic. By doing your auto repair yourself, not only will you be saving on labor costs, but you can avoid mark-ups on the parts you buy.

Add to that the lack of the upsell. With Do-It-Yourself auto repair, you are not going to be pushing services onto yourself that could be done, but don’t necessarily need to be done — random, unscheduled fluid flushes and the like. The mechanic is there to make money, and he’s going to try find all he can to do your car that he can offer.

Another important factor to consider is you care about your vehicle. You are more likely to repair with care than a stranger at the auto shop. An auto mechanic is going to try to get his repair job done as quickly as he can to move on to the next paying customer. You are the one who, in the long run, has to live with the job that is done, and so you are the most likely to make it a quality repair job.

Finally, there are few things that say “I am that old-fashioned, resourceful, powerhouse of practical knowledge and stability that you’ve been looking for” to a woman than a man who knows his way under a hood, and isn’t afraid to get a little dirty going there.

Where Do I Get the Know-How?

So, you’re convinced that saving money, giving your car quality treatment, and showing your woman she’s got herself a real man all combine to make Do-It-Yourself Auto Repair worth trying. But, “How,” you ask, “can I acquire the know-how I need?” The answer to that can be individual and variable depending on you and your car, but the following are some basic tips.

Your Car Manual
Start here, and return here often. Certainly this won’t contain all your do-it-yourself car repair informational needs over the lifespan of your car, but it will tell you the basics of getting around under the hood of your particular make and model.

Do-It-Yourself Auto Repair Books
There are a slew of these available, some for experts, some for dummies, and certainly plenty for you and me.
Try to get a hold of one in your hand before purchasing so you can be sure its breadth, depth, and style of explanations suit your needs.

Online
Web articles, blogs, online manuals, youtube videos, Q&A guides, the list goes on. As with all things on the world-wide web, these vary hugely in cost, reliability, and usefulness.
