Brian Hugh Warner aka Marilyn Manson has given the world a portmanteau word – Mansinthe, which also happens to be his take on that deadly drink, absinthe. Given Mr Manson’s penchant for the outrageous, as is evident from his music, his stage performances, and also his paintings (yup, for all his fans who did not know, Marilyn Manson did 5-minute sketches for drug dealers) absinthe is perhaps the most appropriate beverage for him to remodel.
Absinthe has a well-earned reputation of being a liquor to be consumed only by the hardiest of drinkers. The 45%-75% ABV (alcohol by volume) range places it higher than whiskey, wine, beer, and most rums. Add to this its psychoactive effects attributed to wormwood and one begins to understand why absinthe is banned in so many countries. Van Gogh chopped off his ear under the influence of absinthe.
So, although Mansinthe has a distinguished pedigree it has garnered mixed reactions – some have considered its smell to that of a sewer and its taste with that of piss. At the same time it has managed to wow judges at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and win the Gold Medal. Mansinthe cannot be legally purchased in the U.S. A regular bottle of Mansinthe is available in Europe and costs Euro 36.
