The World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition, the premier strength competition on the planet, had a worthy winner for the year 2008; it was the same guy who won it in 2007 – Mariusz Pudzianowski. This genial Pole has won this prestigious title a record five times. Besides he happens to be proficient in karate and boxing.
The WSM competition showcases features that appeal to the most basic and natural urges of men. Yes, it is about strength, raw and brute yet very effective and so functional. Men have looked to establish records for strength from the days of antiquity and the giants of today are only carrying forward the tradition of Atlas, Hercules, Rustom, Sohrab, Bheem, Eugene Sandow, Louis Cyr and so many more. The exploits of the early 20th century strongmen make for great reading.
The 2008 competition was held in Charleston, Virginia. Derek Poundstone, the home favorite came in second in a heart-breakingly close contest which was decided in the final segment of the final round – the grueling Atlas Stones. Quite frankly, the U.S has not really shone in this competition since the days of the legendary Bill Kazmaier, Phil Pfister’s heroics in 2006 not withstanding.
The strength feats of these guys such as tossing 50 lb kegs over 14 feet high walls or squatting 900 lbs of bricks give couch-based strength enthusiasts like me a huge vicarious kick.
Check out the events from the 2007 WSM competition.
