Not to get all ‘film bro’ on you, but this seems like the perfect guy movie of all time. Darren Aronofsky somehow got Mickey Rourke to come out of ‘actor jail’ to play a washed-up professional wrestler. Imagine Hulk Hogan if he had a worse agent, basically. So there’s the premise.
Its a very strange concept for a movie and doesn’t quite scream “hey! lets all get in the Subaru and head down to the movies”. So why see it? Rourke is already generating Best Actor buzz and the film hasn’t even been released yet. It was written by Robert Seigel, ex head writer for The Onion. Its got an original song by Bruce Springsteen as the title song, too. This movie should come with a pack of beef jerky and a quarter to call your dad as it is simply that much of a quintessential guy movie. Due to my amazing prowess as a journalist I’ve gotten to see about 15 minutes of this movie and let me just say: its fucking great.
