It is now 35 years since Bobby Darin’s sad demise but his musical legacy lives on. Few people have compiled a body of work as vast and diverse as Bobby’s in a life spanning only 37 years. Bobby Darin worked knowing that his weak heart could give up on him anytime and his drive to perform led him to be recognized as one of the most beloved rock and roll idols of the 50s and the 60s. Bobby’s life story is a touching and inspiring profile in courage that all men can look up to. For a guy who was not expected to live beyond 16, Bobby lived his life to the fullest and worked to fulfill his potential knowing that his time was short.
Before he was 25, Bobby had recorded classics such as Splish Splash and Dream Lover both selling millions of copies with Dream Lover becoming a THE ballad against which ballads to come would be compared. These were followed by what many consider to be Bobby Darin’s signature song – “Mack the Knife”. The song, which Bobby revamped to give it a jazzy feel, was number one for nine weeks and won the Grammy Award for Record of the Year in 1960. Given that Bobby’s version of “Mack the Knife” has been pitted against Sinatra’s rendition and is still considered a certified gem speaks volumes of Bobby’s ability to infuse life into a song.
Bobby Darin passed away in 1973 but not before he had won a Golden Globe, an Oscar nomination, the French Film Critics Award, and of course a Grammy. Bobby’s oeuvre is a rich one and although his music is probably from the times of our dads, he has something for everybody.
