Grammy Nominations for 2009

By Rex Freiberger on December 4th, 2008

The 2009 Grammy nominations are out. The glittering nominations ceremony was co-hosted by LL Cool J and Taylor Swift; it was telecast live on CBS yesterday. Before the list, some food for thought about the Grammy awards. Over the years the Grammy has had its share of critics who have felt that the awards are just a self-congratulatory exercise carried out by the music industry, or else how does one explain the zillion categories and stuff like the Grammy Trustee Award.

Also, its worth considering that some truly all-time great acts like Led Zeppelin, The Doors, The Who, Neil Young, Janis Joplin, Bob Marley, Lynyrd Skynyrd and a few others never won a single Grammy. Makes you wonder if the geriatrics doing the voting have ever been in tune with the music of the day.

This year’s nominations are special because after a gap of almost fifteen years, the Brits are making their presence felt very strongly at these awards. In fact all five nominations for “Record of the Year” are by British acts -

  • Adele for “Chasing Pavement”
  • Coldplay for “Viva la Vida”
  • Leona Lewis for “Bleeding Love”
  • M.I.A. for “Paper Planes”
  • Robert Plant with Alison Krauss for “Please Read the Letter”

Lil Wayne leads the pack with eight nominations followed by ColdPlay which has seven.

Watch the Coldplay number “Viva La Vida”, it may or may not score at the awards, but its a hit with a lot of listeners.
