A stopwatch is a great workout tool. It’s like a handheld energy switch; it’s such an effective motivator. Working out, after all, is all about motivation. Stopwatches have no special magic; they are merely hand held timing devices used to ensure the accuracy of workouts, races and sporting events. The time elapsed between start and finished can be determined accurately every time, with no wiggle room left for arguments.
There are many types of stopwatch available for you to use for your workouts. There is the basic analog stopwatch, the old school type that look like a basic clock face with hands, designed to start and stop at the press of a button. They typically have a second, smaller button that resets and zeros the stopwatch so the next time can be taken. They also, in many cases, can be used to record lap times. When the split button is pressed while the watch is running, the display freezes, although the watch continues to track the time—that’s why they call it a split time.
Many regular wristwatches have a stopwatch function. This is typically referred to as a chronograph. This feature is available on many, many wristwatches at all price points. Most of these will also be able to do split times as well. Stopwatches are available on both digital and analog watches, and are a popular feature on either.
Digital stopwatches perform exactly the same task as analog stopwatches. They are different immeasurably under the hood, but on the surface the only difference is that the digital stopwatch has digital display, like a digital watch. The display is typically an LCD. Digital stopwatches keep time using something called a crystal oscillator timing element. This makes them much more accurate than mechanical timepieces powered by a mainspring that has to be wound regularly. Digital stopwatches often include more functions than analog stopwatches, including date and times of day functions, and some even have connectors to external sensors, for greater accuracy.
Although you don’t really need all the bells and whistles if you have made a commitment to yourself to get fit and stay fit, a stopwatch can make exercising and tracking your progress more convenient, however. Although fitness accessories are inessential, they can make working out more appealing. Working out is all about making progress, and there are many fitness accessories that are made to track progress.
There are other things you should consider. If you are going to get fit, you will need to be honest with yourself. You have to recognize when you are making excuses to avoid a workout. Stopwatches that track your progress motivate you by measuring progress you can’t detect with the naked eye.
Accessories that seem meaningless, or merely aesthetic, can still make your workout more appealing and comfortable and therefore help keep you committed to working out. While you can work out without fitness accessories, they make your workout more enjoyable and your results more visible. This can help you maintain your commitment to exercise.
