Satellite radio boom boxes help you make the most of your satellite radio experience. It used to be that the only way to enjoy satellite radio was to listen either in your car or at home. Then, portable plug and play receiver units became available. They had limited use and worked off of either home or car based radio. Now, more accessories are available to help you expand your listening enjoyment.
What is satellite radio? This is radio that is broadcast from a satellite instead of traditional land-based radio broadcasts. Users pay a monthly subscription fee and are guaranteed to be able to listen to satellite radio almost anywhere. You cannot pick up satellite radio with your traditional car or home stereo. Special hardware is required to decode the signal. There are no commercials to have to deal with on satellite radio and you can enjoy specialized programming that is not available on traditional radio stations.
Satellite radio started out being marketed primarily for your car or home. To listen, you must have a special receiver than can get a clear satellite signal. Some people find this restriction to be limiting. Because of this, boom boxes for satellite radio are gaining in popularity and use.
No matter which type of boom box you buy you must have a subscription to use them. Subscriptions are only available for a monthly fee from a satellite radio provider.
The boom box itself has a dock inside it that holds the satellite radio receiver. Most often, this dock is in the center of the boom box. The core receiver units that fit in the docks are not included with the purchase of a boom box. Those have to come from the satellite subscription service such as XM. When the boom box is combined with a receiver unit it will allow you to enjoy your satellite radio subscription where you are. Boom boxes are great portable radios for people who are on the go. You can take the boxes to tailgate parties, picnics and the lake or beach.
The boom boxes are powered by either plugging them into an electrical source or by batteries. Adapters can be purchased which will allow you to plug the boxes into your car outlet. Many people who use batteries find that rechargeable batteries are the most cost-effective in terms of use per expense.
Without the addition of batteries, boom boxes are fairly lightweight. Like traditional boom boxes, satellite boom boxes are designed to be portable and used in a variety of settings. Headphones can be plugged in on most units for times when using the stereo speakers would be inconvenient for other people.
As with any new technology the cost of a satellite radio boom box is higher than for a traditional AM/FM boom box. The lower end models seem to start at about $100 and go up from there. But for those who love satellite radio, it’s a small price to pay.
