Hydroponics is considered by many to be a very modern technology, but plants have actually been grown without soil for a very long time. It offers many advantages over traditional soil gardening and few of the disadvantages. Hydroponics as a method of gardening is very green friendly. It is a great way to grow your food in an environmentally friendly way.
One of the prime advantages of hydroponic gardening is that it can be done almost anywhere. One of the key ingredients in traditional gardening is soil. With hydroponic gardening, you don’t use soil, by definition. This makes it very feasible as a form of gardening for apartment dwellers.
A disadvantage of hydroponics is that unlike traditional gardening, you can’t just plant something and let nature take its course. IT requires upkeep. Then again, many forms of traditional gardening require lots of maintenance, depending on the desired health and growth of plants you desire.
If you want to be green, hydroponic gardening is a good way to go. Hydroponics is in no way unnatural or artificial. Plants require some basics to grow normally. Hydroponics, just like growing plants in soil, makes plants grow by supplying them with what they need, when they need it. Otherwise growing plants hydroponically isn’t that different from growing plants by any other method. The techniques may vary, however.
Furthermore, hydroponics is Earth-friendly; more so than conventional gardening could ever be. Hydroponics, in spite of growing plants in water, actually uses less water than conventional, soil-based gardening—a lot less. In fact, Hydroponics needs between 70 and 90 percent less water than gardening by traditional methods, and no fertilizer is wasted through its loss to soil runoff. These benefits, including, water conservation and non-pollution of lakes and streams, are major benefits in terms of ‘green’ growing of crops in an eco-friendly manner.
Another advantage of hydroponics is its cost effectiveness. Hydroponics can be very expensive, but it certainly doesn’t have to be unless you are growing plants hydroponically on a space station. It could also be expensive if you are determined to grow plants in the desert. However, if you want to grow plants hydroponically in a less exotic setting, it’s pretty straightforward and not expensive at all. It’s practical, easy and affordable. In fact, it is every bit as easy and affordable as the average hobby garden.
Another advantage of hydroponics is the degree of control you have over your plants nutrition. The idea that hydroponics produces super-plants is false. Hydroponics grows the same kind of plants as any other method that grows healthy plants. The difference is that hydroponics is a method that optimizes the growth of the plants. This optimum growth is the source of the myth of the super plants grown hydroponically. Their genes haven’t changed. That’s because t is easier to get a plant to grow to its full potential in a hydroponic garden than in soil, because the soil’s makeup can have a huge influence on the plant’s growth. With hydroponics, the gardener is in full control.
