While some paintball players simply find a group of like-minded friends and head out to private woods or a private field for a game of “renegade” or “outlaw” paintball, many players (and their parents) prefer the more regulated and organized games provided at paintball parks. Besides the increased oversight at these paintball parks, there are generally fewer accidents and injuries during supervised, ordered paintball games, and the supervisors are watching for any problems and can quickly call emergency help if it is needed. Another thing many players really like about paintball parks
One type of field paintball location is the mini city. The creators of these fields build structures that resemble a city, such as stores, houses, and streets. Naturally, the building are not finished, and there is no glass in building windows so that the buildings can be used as hiding places and vantage points for stalking opposing players. The larger the city and the wider variety of structures, the more exciting and intense the paintball game becomes.
Another extremely popular type of layout for playing field paintball is the castle field. The castles are generally constructed of wood and not stone, but are built to be similar to a real, medieval castle. The most elaborate will feature turrets with spiral staircases, interior rooms, gates and drawbridges, and inner keep, and ramparts surrounding the entire castle area. The games in this field may include one team attempting to storm the castle and wrest control from the other team, stationed inside the castle. Some parks feature other period landscapes such as an old west layout. This may include a military fort with ramparts and inner walls somewhat like a castle, and provide castle-like siege play. Other scenarios may be isolated cabins or a mining town façade with the typical wild-west stores, hotel and individual homes.
Military scenarios are another popular layout for field paintball. Old military equipment, such as helicopters, planes, jeeps and supply containers are used to create the obstacles and cover areas in a field set up to look like a military supply depot or an airfield. Other fields simply use large, plastic pipes called “hyperpipes” that the field creators place strategically in different locations around the field. These pipes can be laid flat or placed vertically to provide different kinds of cover. Some are large enough for a player to hide in, while others are too small and are used for cover only.
Some parks also offer natural playing fields, which do not use any constructed obstacles, but rely simply on the natural cover available in the woods or tall grass. An option that becomes more popular as the popularity of paintball as a sport grows is parks featuring speedball fields. These fields are used in most tournament play, and are largely flat and open. About half the size of a football field, the creators of the speedball field use different obstacles, now usually inflatable obstacles of various sizes that can be varied for different games. Playing paintball at paintball parks can be a fun and exciting alternative to the natural playing field, and is often safer than playing on your own.
