There are a lot of different types of Muscle Spasms. Anytime a persons muscles cramp up unexpectedly or tighten without warning there can be a great deal of pain and soreness. Cramps and muscle spasms are painful, and can strike anyone at any time. They can be brought on and created by work, automotive injuries, sporting events or any activity that involved repetition. Any motion or activity can bring on a sudden onset of muscle spasms, and as anyone that has ever endured such activity can tell you, it causes a great deal of pain.

Muscle spasms are caused much of the time by the build up of lactic acid and other byproducts of muscle use. As these substances build up, they cause a number of different things to happen. The muscle is unable to perform, it cant recover and the blood to the muscle is reduced, and the muscle fibers themselves become short and tight, and pain often begins.

Some of the causes of muscle spasms include disc disorders, over extending the muscle on a repeated basis, sudden unexpected movement of the muscle, neck tightness or soreness, or in some cases even nerve disorders.

Abnormal activity or sudden activity of any kind can trigger muscle spasms. It is important to stretch before trying to engage in any activity, because it will give your muscles a chance to adjust. Without a warm up your muscles do not have a chance to lengthen, and the fibers remain short. The normal muscle activity cannot begin suddenly, you have to have a period of warm up for the muscles to be able to take up the strain, even for normal activity.

There are some activities that tend to cause muscle cramping nearly every time. If you get dehydrated and have some of the necessary salts in your body leach out, then you can get muscle cramps and muscle tightness. Sickness and nausea, that causes diarrhea or vomiting is another way that you may experience dehydration, and for this reason muscle soreness nearly always accompanies getting the flu.

If you engage in prolonged exercise you also will experience a tendency to have your muscles tighten, and become reluctant to move. This will cause pain and fatigue, and can be treated by gentle stretching, heat and rest. Icing your muscles will also help, what often works best is heat and then icing, and to repeat the process.

Muscle Spasms are caused by a number of different issues, and they can be treated by a number of different approaches, but rest and relaxation work the best. For the most part the average person will experience Muscle Spasms a number of times in their lives, but it normally is not serious. If you treat your body with respect, stretch before activity, drink plenty of fluids and do not over exercise, then the typical amount of Muscle Spasms that you will have to endure will be reduced considerably.
