Karaoke is a popular form of entertainment. Singers belt out lyrics to recorded music. Remember the bouncing ball in the sing-along cartoons we used to watch as children? Karaoke is a take off on that concept. The songs for karaoke are often popular current tunes from which the lead vocals (and sometimes all of the vocals) have been removed.
Commonly, the words to the songs appear on a video monitor as the participant sings. A dot appears to prompt the singer along. Or, on some programs, the words will change color as they scroll across the video monitor.
Karaoke is becoming popular at parties, events, bars and clubs. It’s a sensation just about everywhere that people gather. Teenagers and college students especially seem to appreciate the popularity of karaoke singing.
In the 1990s karaoke really took off in the United States. It became popular in clubs and churches where the cost of a live band was often impractical for vocalists. The karaoke machines that were available then would allow you to play a regular CD or cassette tape. You adjusted the balance to remove the existing lyrics so the vocalist could be heard. This met with mixed results as key instruments were often removed as well.
Since this system allowed for almost any song to be played on the karaoke machine there was almost never a shortage of fresh music. People could stay excited about the vocal performances because songs were only repeated by popular demand.
In the late 1990’s the machines changed. CDs became more popular but you could no longer use the balance to remove the lyrics. Special split-track CDs emerged on the market. These were great but keeping the titles fresh became an expensive proposition for karaoke singers.
By the early 2000s the karaoke scene changed again. Now, video monitors and music downloads came onto the scene. Karaoke once again became inexpensive and the popularity soared once again.
But there is still the challenge of keeping the music selection fresh and up to date. Every karaoke Disc Jockey (DJ) will tell you that without a constantly updated inventory the karaoke crowd will lose interest.
