Attempting to quite understand GPS is complicated, its advanced technology so complexity should be expected. If you take it slow and one step at a time you will be able to understand this technological marvel. Often for something like GPS a little information is better than too much when trying to understand it. For as far back in time as one can remember, man has always been trying to find his way to somewhere or perhaps wondering where he is. This has always been quite bothersome and there have only been fairly unsophisticated methods of help. Yes, many attempts have been made over the years but they had major flaws. It was finally the U.S. Department of Defense that took a stand and soaked the billions of dollars that it took to finally get it right. The Global Positioning System, otherwise known as GPS which put a permanent change to navigation forever.
GPS is a worldwide radio-navigation system formed from a constellation of 24 satellites and their ground stations. It uses three man made stars so that they can be points of reference for calculating positions to the precision of a mere meter. In most cases the accuracy is better than within a centimeter. Every single spot on earth has an address! GPS technology has been so advanced that now they are narrowed down to using just a few integrated circuits and the result has been quite economical. It also makes this system available to everyone. GPS technology is being used today for laptop computers, cars, construction equipment, farm machinery, boats, movie making gear, and airplanes.
GPS can determine a position in three dimensions altitude, latitude, and longitude. There are two types of GPS tracking passive and real time. A passive GPS tracker records travel activities and positions, which can be downloaded to a computer. A real time GPS tracking system will show its position, live. GPS tracking systems are used more by the general public. GPS tracking units are most commonly used for vehicle tracking, auto theft prevention, asset protection, and fleet tracking.
The newer technology that is being used for GPS is even more accurate. An even more superior GPS system is due to be complete in 2010, the European Galileo Project. It will revolutionize the capabilities of current GPS. This technology is being released in the UK and the US military will no longer have the home advantage. The cost of GPS systems has come down quite nicely in price so many companies are taking full advantage of it now. GPS tracking can be used in a better way when it is combined with other broadcast technologies, some are in watches or even in radios now. GPS phones and wristbands are sold in the market today. These have been used mostly with the tracking of vehicles. Tracking is also being used in other fields such as pet tracking, coordinated tracking and consumer tracking. Many employers are now using these systems as well in an attempt to monitor employees that work out on the road or in the field.
