Go Karts

Go karts are one of those fun inventions that any individual, regardless of age and size, can enjoy. Although the common stereotype is that go karts are for the younger crowd, many individuals express a strong enjoyment of them. Younger teens and adolescents enjoy building them from scratch, usually with their parents, and will then race each other in a display of creativity, resourcefulness, and a desire to go fast. Although some hold a concern that go karts are not very safe, with proper care they can be very enjoyable and a way for your children to see something that have built with their own two hands.

If you have never encountered a go kart in person before, you have probably at the very least seen one and wondered what exactly that strange contraption is. At first glance, the go kart looks like a very crude formula one car; it is flat, very low to the ground except for the driver and the motor which is always placed in the back. There are always four small wheels and typically the go kart is exposed and only a skeletal shell that has not been covered over with siding as the formula one car would have been. Unless it is one where the builder took a great deal of time and money, normally the engine is a “pull to start” system where the driver must pull on a start cord to make the engine work. As some children are not very strong, this helps parents make sure they are always there when the child wants to drive.

Go karts are not very safe in the structural sense. They are not meant for off road action, and if improperly driven can result in injury to the driver. Due to this, it is very important to make the driver wear protective gear and for him or her to properly educated on when, where, and how to drive in order to protect him or her as much as possible. If the driver is a child, you may wish to enroll him or her into a child go kart safety course in order to have a trained professional be the one to teach him or her how to properly use a go kart.

If building a go kart is a task that initially appears daunting, there are many books and kits which you can purchase in order to buy one. If you want to keep costs down as much as possible, you can borrow a go kart building book from the library and contact your local car yard to see what parts they have available. In most instances, a typical lawnmower motor will be perfect for a go kart. As many individuals upgrade their lawnmowers, you will almost always be able to find a working model in good condition which you can use. By taking proper care, the builder and driver can get years of enjoyment out of the go kart they either bought or built with their own two hands.
