Diners Club was the very first credit card that was ever used and its main focus was on those that travelled frequently and has very lucrative incomes to afford these trips. The Diners Club credit card had to be paid in full and upon receipt once the bill arrived. The Diners Club actually monopolized the market but that didn’t last long with the introduction of Carte Blanche and American Express. Carte Blanche later went on to partner with Diners Club. Diners Club was facing some fierce competition as soon after revolving credit cards were introduced through Bank Americard, which later became well known as Visa and Interbank Master Charge which later became well known as MasterCard by the end of the 1960’s. Diners Club however, was the first company to allow franchises to enter under the name of Diners Club and Amoco Gasoline Company then released a co branded version of their Diners Club credit card, the American Torch Club. Soon after, Sun Oil Company followed suit with their Sun Diner Club Card.
Diners Club entered into an agreement with Master Card in early 2000 so that Diners Club cards that were issued in the US and Canada would feature the MasterCard logo as well as a sixteen digit account number on the front of the card and was able to be used any place that accepted MasterCard. In other countries the account number is a fourteen digit number and MasterCard appears on the back side. It’s crazy to think that this all began with a forgotten wallet and still today remains a premium global brand and is accepted in over 200 countries and 70 local currencies. Diners Club in North America is owned by Citigroup and corporate headquarters are located in Chicago, Illinois. Diners Club is more recognized and used by mid scale to larger corporations, professionals and individual business people. Because of whom Diners Club services it must maintain a superior package with universal acceptance, unsurpassed service, and award winning rewards.
