There are a lot of people in the United States and around the world that enjoy Cycling as a hobby or as exercise. Cycling is a sport that is very inexpensive to get into, you can get a bicycle for less than $200 dollars that will do you well in a general riding for health type of endeavor. If you become more involved, there are different selections in equipment that are far more expensive, but to begin with you can get into Cycling for fairly low amount of money.

Cycling dates back to Leonardo da Vinci, he had different drawings that indicated different types of human powered 2 wheeled transportation, but the true history of the modern bicycle started about 1817, but the early ones featured having to have your feet on the ground and were not true cycles as such. The 1860’s and 1870’s brought the infamous “high wheelers,” these resemble giant tricycles, and were pretty dangerous to ride.

Finally in the 1890’s the “Safety bike,” was created, which is much the same physical make up that we know in today’s bicycle. Cycling improved and had many refinements throughout the 1900s, and the modern bicycle is now pretty safe, features a number of gears and provided the rider wears a helmet, Cycling can be a fairly safe sport.

Cycling is a method of covering a lot of ground much faster than walking or running, and it can be a very enjoyable way of exercising. Most people that engage in Cycling do so for sport, for enjoyment, and a few people are those that ride professionally. One of the record holders in the International Cycling scene is American, Texan Lance Armstrong, who won a record number of different international competitions, including a record number of Tour de France bike races. The Tour de France is considered the premier International Bike race and is held in France every year.

There have been a lot of advances to the sport of Cycling. In 1996 for the first time Mountain Biking was introduced as a game in the Olympics, and before that team cycling was added decades earlier to regular Olympic competition.

The sport of Cycling is estimated by many to be the third most popular public sport in the United states, with millions of people from 7 to 70 owning their own bicycle. In the early days bicycles were used often in cities by messengers, and later they became more of a public recreational vehicle. Nearly everyone knows how to ride a bicycle, and it is an enjoyable method of transportation as well as a great way to get a workout.

Cycling is something that can be done solely, or it can be participated in by a family or a group. There are Cycling tours, and international and national Cycling clubs. Whether you participate in Cycling as a sport or as a hobby, it is rewarding, physically restorative, and a lot of fun.
