Credit Cards Rewards/Incentives

By Yosef Solomon on December 1st, 2008

It seems like everywhere that you look today there are credit cards. These cards are more comfortable to most cashiers as opposed to cash money. Many of these credit cards offer various features, rewards, and incentives. Reward credit cards are cards that give you rewards for spending your credit. As with anything there are pros and cons of using these cards. Some of what is offered is a reward and other times they are nothing more than schemes.

The idea is to encourage you to spend with the idea that you will be rewarded for spending by earning travel rewards or discounts on products. One known reward scheme is cards that give you a percentage of what you spend back to you which is usually a half of a percent to one percent maximum. The only people that could ever benefit from these rewards are people that use their cards quite often and spend a lot BUT also pay balances in full every month.

Another common reward is the air travel rewards where you earn travel points by using your credit card. These cards might look appealing at first but once you start examining it better you will likely see that they are not so impressive after all. The amounts rewarded are very low and you have to really spend a lot of money in order for then to be beneficial at all. The cost of these cards is normally a higher interest rate and often annual fees. In order to really receive any significant benefit from these rewards you would have to spend as much as possible each month on your card and then pay the balance immediately in full.

You must also make sure there is no annual fee and although the rewards are meager, they will add up over a period of time. Gas credit cards also tend to offer incentives if you purchase gas from a specific company. These rewards are normally in the form of gas credits. These are especially appealing to people that are willing to do anything to save a few bucks at the pumps these days. These savings are also meager but also can add up over a period of time. If you want to take advantage of these rewards, and many do, then you must make them work for you.

Credit card companies claim that most never redeem their rewards. If you have cash back rewards then they are automatic but anything else you have to contact the company and request your rewards or incentives. Often card holders either don’t know they have rewards waiting or they just don’t want to be bothered dealing with them. You could pay all of your monthly bills on these cards each month and then use cash to pay off the balance when the statement comes in. The idea is that you don’t spend unnecessary money in an attempt to get these rewards. If you do not have the ability to really use the card then any reward incentives will not really apply to you.
