Computers

Think about the office of the future, the very near future. With everyone on a health craze it only makes perfect sense for the treadmill to be part of the computer. This would help everyone get a bit of exercise while they are on the job, this would help fitness and likely also lower employer’s portions of the health insurance premiums too. What a great idea. Mayo Clinic endocrinologist Dr James Levine is the one who designed this concept. He calls it a vertical workstation.

If you already have a treadmill you are not out of luck as you do have options. There is an option of a standing desk that fits over the treadmill which runs about $500. The prize of this is that while you are both working and getting healthier at the same time you also are benefiting from increased energy, weight loss, increased productivity, and you can skip the gym.

You sit all day long, usually at your computer and after lunch most people begin to feel sluggish. You feel like you’re slowing down. You don’t feel like working. You would rather put your head on your desk. Put your computer on the stand and start walking and working. At first you might think that it is impossible to walk and type at the same time but what happens is that you forget you are walking and you don’t sweat either. You just consistently burn calories and stay on top of your mental game. You will be more productive and feel much better too.

Walking each day for an hour gives you a significantly less chance of developing heart disease or diabetes so incorporating your computer and your exercise will allow you a brand new opportunity to stay healthy while you work. Most people spend entire days in front of the computer. If you’re going to work this hard you might as well stay fit at the same time.

There are also cheaper options if you want to use your laptop there is a stand that secure to the treadmill for under $200. But there are also some real fancy set ups out there too that cost some money but are very sturdy, attractive, and beneficial. They are a treadmill/workstation for about $6,000. Yikes! Dr. James Levine suggests that you keep a 1 mph pace on your treadmill while working. Instead of being sedentary in front of your computer, you would stand. But instead of standing still, you’d walk on a treadmill.

A speed of 1 MPH is enough to avoid breaking a sweat but fast enough to burn an extra 100 calories per hour. With a healthy diet this would reflect about 50 pounds of weight loss a year plus it will keep you more alert and focused. With more and more people working from their home office this is a fantastic idea and one that is sure to catch on quickly. Of course you wouldn’t have to stay on the treadmill all day long because the laptop could simply be unattached and placed back on your desk.
